Not Your Average Bagel

Blogging bjmagg is back! After a couple of personal weeks off and a revamp of the site, I return with some knowledge from gal pal, Carissa Cantie. Carissa is going to share her outcome on one of those many delicious recipes that consume your Facebook feed:

I am completely obsessed with these bagels and I am forever grateful for Skinnytaste. Gina Homolka, the author of Skinnytaste, created a collection of simple, healthy, and tasty recipes that any 20-something can make. While I’ve never been a great cook – I have been loyal to Skinnytaste for the last three years and have never made a bad meal. So when she posted about these bagels I knew I had to try them out!

Why do I love these bagels the most? They have way less carbs than a store-bought bagel. We’re talking a difference of 56g of carbs compared to 26.5g of carbs! Yes I know – I could hardly believe it myself. Not to mention the high amount of protein thanks to the Greek Yogurt!

INGREDIENTS

1 cup unbleached all purpose flour, whole wheat or gluten-free mix*

2 teaspoons baking powder

3/4 teaspoon kosher salt (use less if using table salt)

1 cup non-fat Greek yogurt

1 egg white, beaten (whole egg works fine too)

(optional toppings: Trader Joe’s everything bagel seasoning, sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic flakes, dried onion flakes)

Makes four bagels. Serving size is one bagel.

STEP ONE

Mix flour, salt, and baking powder together in a medium-sized bowl.

STEP TWO

Add the Greek Yogurt! The dough should be crumbly.

STEP THREE

Sprinkle flour on counter and kneed the dough. Split the dough equally to form ¾ inch-thick ropes and connect the ends!

STEP FOUR

Get your egg wash ready and brush on top of bagels. Add your seasoning.

STEP FIVE

Place in the oven at 375f on the top rack for 25 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes then enjoy!

TIPS AND TRICKS 1. Make sure your baking powder is not expired or else it will not rise 2. Use a parchment paper + spray with oil to prevent sticking. 3. The bagels expand quite a bit so make sure they have plenty of room. 4. Greek yogurt instead of plain is a must. Drain any liquid. 5. If your dough is sticky add more flour.
